Going through a divorce can result in many emotions. Losing a relationship you believed would last forever can be devastating. Typically, people experience denial, guilt, grief, anger, depression and anxiety.  

So, how can you manage these emotions and, in turn, rebuild your life? Here are some tips:

1. Accept your emotions

You should allow yourself to feel. Acknowledge that you are sad your marriage has ended, or you feel guilty for initiating a process that may be causing your spouse or children pain. Or that you are depressed about losing companionship or afraid of the future.

Giving yourself permission to feel allows you to process your emotions, which is integral to healing. Suppressing your emotions can increase the risk of mental health issues. You don’t have to act like you are fine, filling your time with work and social events. 

2. Get support

People who go through a divorce have a high chance of developing clinical depression and anxiety disorders. Getting support is a great way to protect your mental health. 

While you should have alone time to process your emotions, avoid isolating yourself. You need to spend time with loved ones. You can move in with your family or ask loved ones to visit you on the weekends.

Moreover, consider joining a support group to share your experiences with people who understand what you are going through. It also helps to go to therapy to gain the tools necessary for your healing.

3. Practice self-care

Self-care is crucial when going through a divorce. Journaling, exercising, eating healthy meals, meditating, reconnecting with your hobbies/interests and setting healthy boundaries protect your long-term well-being and allow you to make decisions with a clear head.
